After unloading and clearing, the AR’s bolt should be locked back. It needs to be forward and in battery for disassembly. This is achieved by pushing the bolt lock/release.
When the rear action pin is pushed fully to the right, it will stop and be held in place.
Separating the upper and lower receiver will allow you to access the bolt carrier.
Gently retract the charging handle. This will pull the bolt carrier to the rear, so you can grab on to it for removal.
A gun vise is nice to hold your AR in place during cleaning and maintenance, but isn’t necessary. You are ultimately going to end up with three major parts: upper receiver, lower receiver, and bolt assembly.
